They call it compassion. We call it betrayal.
California Democrats have once again passed legislation that undermines parental rights and cloaks radical overreach in the language of family protection. Assembly Bill 495, misleadingly titled the “Family Preparedness Plan Act of 2025,” was signed into law last week by Governor Gavin Newsom. Touted as a measure to support immigrant families in crisis, this bill is far more than that. It creates a legal shortcut for strangers and loosely defined “non-relatives” to assume custody of children without court oversight or parental consent.
To anyone who still believes the progressive rhetoric coming out of Sacramento is about “protecting families,” AB 495 should be a wake-up call.
The law gives the ability to third parties to take control of children’s medical and educational decisions, including permanent and controversial procedures like abortion and gender transition, without the parents’ knowledge or approval. This is not hyperbole. It is written into the language of the bill.
This law doesn’t just threaten the family unit; it replaces it. And that’s not by accident—it’s by design.
