There's a Big Update on the 14-Year-Old Girl Who Duke Denied a Kidney Transplant Over the Covid Shots

The teenage girl was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disorder. But her health troubles were just beginning, due to America's "medical tyranny."

Yulia Hicks, an adopted orphan from wartorn Ukraine, has been forced to endure a number of personal ordeals in her fourteen-year-old life. But America's medical system must have been last place she expected to face more injustice.

The teenage girl has been diagnosed with a genetic kidney disorder. So, when the Hicks turned to Duke University's hospital, they had no reason to expect they would be subject to biomedical discrimination.

The Hicks family jumped through Duke University's hoops and appeared to check all the boxes that would make Yulia eligible for a kidney transplant. But when the issue of childhood vaccination was brought up, the family was put in a bind. Duke would not perform the surgery unless Yulia received the Covid vaccine. And on top of that, the hospital added an HPV vaccine requirement to its list.

"We were hopeful that things would go our way," the Hicks wrote. "Today we were told that Yulia cannot have a transplant at Duke even if we have a live donor for her because of our refusal of the HPV and Covid vaccines. The HPV is new, we just learned of it yesterday. So here we sit contemplating our next steps."

"To think that a committee can determine someone's life is terrifying," they added. "This is without a doubt medical tyranny. What has become of the medical community? How does the refusal of a shot that is known to cause many health issues AND does NOT stop the spread of a disease deny a 14 year a lifesaving therapy? How does that happen in America?"

"Today we are sad," they said. "Tomorrow is a new day, and God is there with an answer for us."

Lee Hicks wrote about the timeline of events that led up to the big phone call.

” Oct 7, we had an 8-hour appt at Duke to talk to many doctors. Dr. Chambers was the biggest one pushing the vaccine. Dr. Chang said he highly recommended it, but it was not mandatory and that families had gotten transplants without it. 

Then we got an email from Catherine Thomas, a wellness coordinator, on Nov 9, stating what vaccines Yulia needed.

The First email was what they recommended. Then in a second email, the verbiage changed to what she must have or what was required. Yulia was presented to the committee on 10 Nov and denied because of a lack of the vaccine.“

The November 29th phone call with the Duke medical team was tape recorded by the Hicks and provided to the National File.

During the call, Dr. Chambers insisted that the COVID vaccine would improve Yulia’s health even while admitting that the vaccine does not prevent anyone from getting COVID.

“We can’t require you to do anything, but we can deny you because you are not following our recommendations,” the welness coordinator Catherine Thomas told Chrissy Hicks.

Beyond the extremely low risk that Covid poses to children — and especially the latest variants — Yulia had already been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and recovered from the prior infection. Natural immunity has been found by multiple scientific studies to be equivalent and even superior to 'vaccinated immunity.'

Chrissy Hicks, Yulia's adopted mother, gave the National File her reaction to the conference call conversation.

“We do not have medical freedom or religious freedom anymore,” Chrissy Hicks said in an emotional interview.

“I feel the same about this for my daughter Yulia as I do any of my 8 biological children or other adopted children. Yulia is my child, and I am afraid that the COVID shot will kill her.  I have done the research and I have a medical background.  I know there will be a lot of blowback on me for bringing this to the public, but I feel very strongly about it,” she said.

There are a plethora of credible scientific studies that tie the Covid shots to a spike in heart inflammation among young people.

But the Duke medical team insists they are following the latest CDC guidelines that say children over two years old need to be vaccinated.

“I have the right to choose and I don’t want to put her at risk," Chrissy Hicks said about Duke's guidelines. "Children are dying unexpectedly and it is scary.  Yulia is already compromised.  Where does it end for the medical community to force things on us?   Yulia has done everything they have asked her to do for months and we did it perfectly, and now they are telling us no, we can’t go further. They are telling her no, and that seems like a great injustice.  As her Mom, that is so upsetting to me, because I feel we were called to be together and I want to give her a good life.”

The good news for Yulia Hicks is that a GiveSendGo crowdfunding effort is raising a significant portion of the funds needed for her kidney transplant. While the original donation goal was $25,000, it now stands at over $69,000 of the $250,000 goal.
