The Trump Effect: Newly Elected President Sets the Stage for Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Agreement
Donald Trump is bringing peace to the world and he isn't even president yet.
Donald Trump's imminent return as President of the United States is already paying off for those who want to see world peace.
Israel and Hezbollah now appear set to agree to a ceasefire, ending over a year of deadly conflict in Lebanon. The war has claimed nearly 3,800 lives and left approximately 16,000 wounded. President Biden is expected to announce the U.S.-brokered agreement on Tuesday, a U.S. official told CBS News.
Under the ceasefire terms, fighting will halt immediately, with Israel beginning a gradual withdrawal of forces over 60 days to allow Lebanese troops to secure the area. Hezbollah will retreat heavy weapons and troops 20 miles from the Israeli border to the Litani River. Initial troop withdrawals are slated to start within 10 days.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet in Tel Aviv to discuss and approve the deal. Concurrently, Lebanon’s government is expected to finalize its approval, marking an end to the deadliest conflict since the country’s civil war ended in 1990.
Netanyahu is scheduled to address Israel at 8 p.m. local time, followed by remarks from President Biden in Washington. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the intense diplomatic efforts behind the deal, involving months of coordination between the U.S., France, Israel, and Lebanon.
“This agreement will save lives and livelihoods on both sides and create conditions for displaced individuals to return safely,” Blinken stated. Rockets continued to exchange along the northern Israeli border on Tuesday despite the looming ceasefire.
The war, initiated by Hezbollah rocket fire in October 2023 in support of Hamas' attacks in Gaza, saw intensified Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in Lebanon in recent months. While France did not directly negotiate, it will participate in implementing the agreement. President-elect Donald Trump's team and Iran, a supporter of Hezbollah, have also been briefed.
The ceasefire represents a critical turning point after more than a year of devastating violence in the region.
