The Department of Homeland Security is moving forward with a new election integrity initiative that would allow states to verify voter citizenship through federal databases while also increasing oversight of mail-in ballot systems nationwide.

According to recent court filings, DHS approved the plan last week and expects implementation efforts to begin before the end of June.

The proposal stems from President Donald Trump’s March executive order titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” which directed federal agencies to work more closely with states on voter eligibility verification and election security.

Under the plan, state election officials would be able to compare voter registration records against federal citizenship databases, including records maintained by the Social Security Administration, the State Department, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The initiative would also expand access to the federal SAVE database, allowing states to verify whether individuals registered to vote are U.S. citizens.
